A Parrot Without A Name By Don Stap

A Parrot Without A Name, by Don Stap, is an adventurous biography/  discovery of a new breed of parrot that was never found before in the Peruvian jungles of Peru. Stap began his journey by setting out in a canoe with ornithologists Ted Parker, and John O’Neill. John O’Neill, who was the first ornithologist to get inside of the canoe decided to travel to Pucallpa, which was also known as the southern most poor peninsula of Peru. The main reason that he decided to travel to Pucallpa with Don and Ted, were for two reasons, and those reasons were, so that they could learn more, and enhance their expertise in the field of ornithology, and learn more about being a curator of birds. After arriving in Peru, this is where all of the “fun” began to happen. When they arrived in Pucallpa, all three men immediately went to the Pucallpa seito Ornithology center. While at the center, a person who was a main beneficial factor for all of the lost birds in Peru at the center was a man named John Belueo, who was a Peruvian scientist, and ornithologist that spent most of his free time in Peru, training new comers that were eager and very experienced and interested in birds, how to go about becoming a curator for the center in Peru, so that they could collect their data for the center that they worked at in their hometown, and compare the results that they received from the data. In Ted and John’s case, as soon as they arrived, there was a bit of a compromise made, as far as the learning went, John agreed that he would teach them some tips about being a curator, along with showing them the never before seen parrot lets in the Peruvian jungle that did not have names, because they were never documented, and never have been seen by real civilization. This information that John was giving them was in exchange for the knowledge of research, and the knowledge of Parrots that were of a different species that were in the United States, that they had been researching for decades, upon time.  As the chapters, and months went by, while they were in Peru, learning how to be curators, they then one day all went to the Mervokian Jungle, which was a jungle, off the east coast of Peru, where they found a different distinct type of parrotlet, that they, along with nobody in the world, had ever seen before. This Parrotlet, was much larger, and more distinct in colors. The words exclaimed by O’neill, were indescribable , in the United States, this type of bird had never been seen, or even come close to being seen. The relation that this bird could have come close to in Parker’s point of view was a very rainbow, or colorful bald eagle type of bird, that ad very distinct large claws, a small head, a very sharp beak, and a larger robust upper body. Now, well to get to the main reason why this book pertains to science, and is so important, is because of the birds themselves. Birds are a main source to our ecosystems, and if birds were removed from our eco system, then our eco system would be off for many reasons. Birds provide and carry out the process of pollination or seed dispersal, which helps benefits the trees and plants. Along with the transfer of pollination via birds, this process is very key, because it helps enable plants go through the process of fertilization, and reproduction, so that new plans can be reproduced into the ecosystem. Although A Parrot Without A Name  was clearly not based on the reproduction of plants, and birds, the research that Ted Parker, John O’Neill and Stap performed in their time in Peru, was all based on birds, how they react to their ecosystems, and finding different birds and parrots that were never ever seen before in other parts of the world, and were not marked and tagged, to be identified. This book overall affects the bird community and science community in general in a way that cannot be reversed. The imprint that Ted Parker, and John O’Neill left on the community of ornithologist was very open and adventurous. Ted and John both proved that just because you are in the field of science, and animals, does not mean that you cannot adventure the world, sight see places, and make your work more interesting tan ever. They both proved that work/research can be challenging at times, but also creative, explorative, and interesting, along with work being what you make it in the future. A quote at the end of the book by Ted Parker, exclaimed “ I will die doing what I love not only for myself, but for the people who have helped me, loved me, and worked with me and for me during the years of being an ornithologist”. Ted Parker died on the day of August 3, 1993 known world wide as a proud American ornithologist, who studied, loved, and cared for birds in the specific field of Neotropics.

I thought Pancakes were food?

It turns out in the Gulf of Mexico Oil spill, that two species of fish were discovered, and scientists called them the Pancake fish. These fish were very unique, for the simple fact that they would wiggle on their face, and along with wiggling on their face, that had elbow shaped fins that would allow them to walk on the sea floor, which would help them get through most of the oil that other fish were not permitted to do. The scientific name for the fish is called “Halieutichthys” which means the “Pancake Bat Fish”. Scientists were unable to tell the significance that the oil’s affects would have on the fish in the long run, but they sure found a cool fish that they aren’t eating with syrup.

This is important to science and biology for the main reason that everybody panicked when the oil spill took place in the Gulf of Mexico, but this spill was not a frenzy or a scare for scientists, this in fact was just a large treasure hunting chest. The scientists that participated in the search for new organisms, in total found over 100 new species of fish, amphibians, and underwater creatures on the Gulf Of Mexico oil spill.

We care about information like this, because although everybody is worried about the oil spill, fun facts, stories, and anecdotes of finding interesting animals, and small organisms in the oil spill that were never documented or discovered, makes things a little more interesting than being completely scary, or tense about the situation at hand.

Drug Abusers Risk More Than Just Death

Studies show that users and abusers of amphetamines face more than three times the risk of receiving a tear in the Aorta, which is one of the major arteries that carry blood out of the heart. Many Physicians say that such a tear in the aorta can lead to extremely permanent affects, along with the emergency having catastrophic potential. The tear of your aorta not only brings pain in the lower stomach area, but it also brings excruciating pain in the chest area for long periods of time. Patients that have suffered from such abuse have said that they have felt as if “ they wanted to die” .

The reason that this is important to biology and science, is due to the fact that scientists and researchers try their best to help the public, by fighting against substance abuse by way of telling the public the ingredients that are inside of the products that they could be inhaling into their bodies, along with other methods such as PSA’s which are used to children, that take facts from scientists and researchers to try to help teens and older adults from getting hooked on substance abuse.

The reason that we care about this, is mainly because everyone cares about their loved ones and their family members, and most teens just do drugs and what not to get the real “High” feeling, to make themselves feel better, well why not get high on amphetamines and receive a chest pain for the rest of your life? That does not sound appealing, and this is why we care, because we want to keep our loved ones safe, healthy, and happy.

Since When Can You Remove Oil Stains?

Researchers in Boston have discovered a new way to remove oil stains on old pieces of art work, by simply figuring out which oil was used when stained on the piece of art work. By figuring out which oil was used on the piece of artwork, this leaves researchers only with the job of using a new and improved method of portable nuclear magnetic resonance, which is used to feel how much energy and pulse of radio the field can take, before a certain type of substance such as oil, becomes sensitive; which in return reveals which oil was used on the piece of art without damaging the piece of artwork.

This is very important to science and biology, for the main reason that every aspect of life has mainly to do with science, and although most people never correspond art with science, now as you can see, lots of research and science has to do with art, because the use of scientists, and researchers help artists solve problems of this caliber.

We care about this type of information, because it is just plain od interesting. At least in my case, I thought that the way that they went about removing the oil stains was really interesting. This also shows the hard work that goes into removing stains on pieces of artwork that go into our public museums each and everyday to keep the revenue and followers of museums and public attractions of this matter.

I thought Energy Drinks were Healthy?

In the news in Boston, energy drinks such as Jolt, and Full throttle contain synthetic caffeine which makes the consumers who drink these products feel good because they are staying awake, but do not fulfill the need of antioxidants. The reason that this is bad, is because antioxidants are needed in our bodies to slow, or prevent the oxidative damage to our body. With energy drinks of this sort just giving caffeine, and no antioxidants, is just breaking the human body down, with absolutely no back up, to stop the breakdown.

The reason that this is important to biology and science, is mainly because when most people think about antioxidants, they think of energy drinks such as blueberry, blackberry, or anything healthy in the berry section. Now, since studies are showing that energy drinks are only providing people a large amount of synthetic caffeine, then this by any chance has fooled many people into buying energy drinks.

We are about information of this sort, mainly because people want to know what they are eating, and what is in their food in this day and age, and when people are constantly being fooled about the contents that are inside of their food, then this leaves people many times on edge about buying certain products that could potentially be harmful, for their bodies that they always thought were good for their body.

I thought gel was for hair?

In the news of science, a very useful cure for wounds has been uncovered. This cure is now known as a synthetic material that revs up blood clotting at a low cost, which is also known as a hydro gel. This product was made for people who receive wounds on the battlefield, or cuts in general. This gel was released at an American Chemists fall meeting on August 23rd, where they announced that such a gel that clears up wounds in minutes would only share a cost of ten dollars per applicant that purchases this product.

This product is very significant to the science and biology community, because discoveries of this nature are helpful, because scientists such as chemists get the credit for all of the hard work that they perform, to help and keep our family members who are in the army, military, and for people in general who end up getting cuts and wounds, to have an alternative instead of going to the doctor.

This is helpful for us and we care because this helps people who necessarily do not have the money to go to the doctor, or the hospital all of the time, to receive aid at a very low cost of only ten dollars.

“Tracking Bird Flu One Poop At A time”

Scientists in Boston have begun to train mice to identity the poop of specific ducks that are infected with avian influenza, also known as bird flu. Scientists, as also multitasking in a futuristic way to try to teach the mice, who can then teach dogs in the future how too follow the trail of the avian influenza, that was responsible for many deaths so far in the United States. Although scientists say that the mice are not always 1005 correct, mice are proven from studies to be 90% correct, when choosing the scent of infected poop, versus uninfected poop.

This information is very useful to biology, and science due to the fact that so many people have died from this avian influenza, and the fact that there is a cure in other organisms to prevent disease from spreading to humans is ground breaking news so that no more deaths will occur, and the disease will be caught before it has spread.

We care about this information because it lets us know how scientists are evolving their research to help the community, and keep the community, safe, happy, and healthy from fatal diseases of this caliber.
